Faux Finish or Trompe L'oiel

Picture
Faux means "false" and trompe l'oiel means "fools the eye". You often see these words overused or used incorrectly. If you'd like to see your walls transformed with an interesting texture or color, it is simply a "wall treatment". If you'd like to see your walls look like marble, parchment, or leather, it is a "faux finish". This term can also apply to aging or staining a wall to make it look new. Trompe L'oiel usually refers to a type of murailzation that makes a finish, such as block, wood or brick or a painted object, like a door, window, or shelf look as if it has dimension and is actually coming out of or off the wall. This is usually achieved through the use of realism and shadows. Many people look at the tub on the left and wonder why I include it. If you look very closely, you will see the shadow of an electrical panel that was originally grey. That panel made that tub look cheap and sad. By faux finishing the panel with a glazed tile effect and using shadows on the painted grout, I was able to achieve a look that" fools the eye" into thinking there is no panel!

Small touches make a difference

To transform this bedroom we added a faux headboard on the wall.  This simple touch created a unique and special accent to this inviting bed.  From headboards to pottery and even rocks - paint makes a big difference and offers you a chance to personalize your area to make it home.
